How the Fairness Foundation Saved Resources and Built a Strong Brand Presence
Non-profit entrepreneur Will Snell faced a common challenge with his organization, the Fairness Foundation, when he first began working on his initiative: how to manage and distribute content on the foundation's website efficiently.
The Fairness Foundation seeks to help build a fairer society in the UK by changing the narrative about fairness in relation to a variety of sectors, including housing, education, and health. The organization influences decision-makers and brings about positive change by identifying problems and suggesting solutions.
This foundation's mission requires Will to build partnerships, create educational content, and communicate with key audiences, including parliamentarians, the media, policy organizations, think tanks, campaign groups, and universities.
A robust content library that showed the Fairness Foundation's value and mission was the most effective way to reach Will’s audience. But as a one-person band, he knew he needed the right website infrastructure to manage his content, spanning many topics.
Will shares why he streamlined his content management and publishing workflow by migrating to Notion and Super as his ultimate and cost-effective content toolkit.
“Super is incredibly valuable because it is the main way we present ourselves to the world. It enables us to look professional and bigger than we actually are. It means we don’t need to spend time or money on having an external web designer.”
Will Snell, the founder of the Fairness Foundation
Setting up the Fairness Foundation for success
Before launching his non-profit in 2021, Will used a basic WordPress site developed by an external party. But the website never saw the light of day.
By the time of the launch, Will had already started using Notion for internal content and soon came across Super. He developed a site with both and used it to introduce the foundation to the public for the first time.
"When I started my new organization, I immediately thought that using Notion from scratch for everything would make sense. And I realized there was the potential to use Notion as a CMS for a website, a CRM–and everything else internally.”
“I realized there were products on the market, such as Super, that would make using Notion as a CMS more feasible, and I immediately saw the use case for it.”
“The great thing about Super was it’s so simple to use–it was quick to get to a working prototype. As far as I could tell, I could do everything I needed to do, and the website would be scalable in the future.”
As Will began scoping for his project before its launch, he soon noticed content databases were key to supporting his mission.
“There is so much content across such a wide range of issues—being able to tag content and put it into database format was incredibly useful,” he says.
“If I could have Notion as the single source of truth for all of my content–internal and external–and publish it on the website already filtered through Notion databases, that would make life easier. That’s exactly what I achieved with Super and Notion.”
Efficiently scaling up and streamlining content management
So far, Will has scaled his website seamlessly.
Since implementing Notion and Super, Will has produced professional-looking content quickly by linking across databases and taking advantage of the full power of Notion's workflows and external tools. In-platform publishing has been a convenient, time-saving feature.
”Notion and Super also enable us to link between different website databases and sections easily. And to be able to filter a page of blog posts by our focus issues—that’s incredibly powerful.”
For someone who likes to flush through changes when publishing new content obsessively, Super’s automatically-created friendly URLs haven’t gone unnoticed by Will. Similarly, the ability to change directories, integrate YouTube and Tally, and customize the navbar and footer have made website management easier.
“I love that it’s kind of ‘fire and forget.’”
The experience has been so easy that Will has launched another digital resource library—the Fairness Index—and has created an interconnected experience across his two websites.
“What amazed me was the ability to cross-reference data and pull out a linked database page from one website and put it into the other. It impressed me they played together so well.”
Using web design in-house to prioritize quality and effectiveness
Full control over content will tie in with the foundation’s plans of carrying out more of its own research, like public attitudes through opinion polling. Using the website to publish all the reports and communicate the research findings online will enable simple access for readers and fast updates when needed.
“I’m not sure I’d be able to achieve something similar through another self-publishing platform,” he says.
“Especially with the demanding database requirements. It would be an unthinkable amount of money if I had to go down a professional route and potentially a bespoke solution.
“Not having to ask someone else to do something and doing it myself in real time is much better, quicker, and cheaper. The same goes for being able to design a solution from scratch rather than retrofitting or tweaking an existing solution to fit.”
“I’ve been really pleased with Super—and consistently delighted by the positive feedback I get about the Fairness Foundation website.”
