How to add icons to Notion?
Adding icons to Notion is a simple 6-step process.
1. Create a new page or navigate to the page where you want to add an icon
Notion pages are where all the magic happens. You can either create a new page or navigate to an existing page where you want to add the icons.
As a reference example, we will use the below page throughout the article.
Let’s add an icon to this page now.
2. Click on the “Add icon” button
To add an icon, hover over the cover image or the title of the page. This will display the “Add icon” button, as displayed in the image below.
3. Choose from the Notion emojis/ icons tray
Clicking on the “Add icon” button initiates the Notion emojis tray.
Click on the “Icons” sub-option since we intend to add an icon to the page. You can enter a keyword into the search bar to look for icons that align with the theme of the page.
Since our sample page is on dirty bulking, let’s look up “burger”. Notion has two in-built icons that are mapped to the “burger” keyword. Clicking on any of them displayed the same icon in different colors. You can choose the color option that contributes the best to the page’s aesthetics and contrast.
In our example, we stuck with the gray colored icon, as demonstrated in the image below, because it offers the best contrast.
4. Click into the page
Now that we have the perfect icon that not only contributes to the theme of the page but also to its aesthetics, it’s time to exit the emoji tray.
To do that, simply click anywhere outside the tray but within the page.
As demonstrated below, the preferred icon has been embedded into the page.
5. Add a custom icon in Notion (Optional)
While Notion has a rich library of icons, you might at some point want to add your own icons. This could be to adhere to the brand guidelines of your Notion website or to use unique imagery to make your content stand apart.
To insert a custom icon into Notion, click on the current icon to pull up the Notion emojis tray, and click on the “Custom” option. You can then paste the URL of the icon or upload it from your drive.
You can get the Notion icon URLs by simply clicking on any icon within this page. You can then paste the URL in the box highlighted in the image below. However, if you plan to upload a new icon to Notion, try to make sure it’s 280 x 280 pixels in size. While you should be okay if the image is larger in dimensions, the image may look a bit compressed when embedded into the page.
Notion Icons Use-Cases
1. Page Headers
In a Notion workspace with diverse content, you can enhance organization by adding icons to page headers, just as we demonstrated in the previous section. Here’s another example, you can use a briefcase icon for work-related pages, a calendar icon for meeting schedules, or a book icon for documentation. This visual cue in the page headers will help you quickly identify and navigate to relevant pages, contributing to an intuitive and user-friendly workspace.
2. Database Views
When managing projects in Notion databases, each project may have multiple views (e.g., Kanban, Table, Calendar). Assigning icons to represent different views, such as a card icon for Kanban, a table icon for the Table view, and a calendar icon for the Calendar view, makes them align better with the theme. These visual cues make it easier for you to recognize and switch between views, contributing to a more intuitive project management system.
3. Status Indicators
In the context of tracking projects in Notion, the use of icons as status indicators provides a visual representation of their progress. For example, a checkmark icon signifies completed tasks, a clock icon denotes tasks in progress, and an exclamation mark indicates items requiring attention. This approach provides a quick and clear overview of the status of different items, thus helping with prioritization and decision-making.
4. Priority Levels
Icons can help with prioritizing tasks in your project database. Icons like stars or exclamation marks can represent high-priority items, while fewer or no icons can indicate lower-priority tasks. This visual cue can assist your team with focusing on and addressing high-priority tasks first.
5. File Types
A Notion workspace can contain a diverse set of documents such as images and spreadsheets. Attaching icons to file links or attachments visually represents the type of file. For example, a document icon signifies text files, a camera icon represents images, and a spreadsheet icon denotes Excel files. This visual representation facilitates quick identification of file types.
