Table of contents
All Notion databases are supposed to have exactly one column with the ‘Title’ property type. This column is where each task appears as a page containing all other property types visible at the top.
It’s similar to the ‘Text’ property type but with limited customization options compared to other columns. For example, you can’t change the property type of the title column. You can’t even duplicate, delete, or hide the title column from the database view.
However, you can edit the name of this column and wrap the text it contains. You can also use it to filter and sort the database.
Furthermore, it’s the leftmost column of the database by default — users instinctively populate it before getting to other columns, ignoring its shortcomings.
This guide shows how to hide the original title column while retaining its content.
Here’s how:
1. Open the Notion database
We will use the sample Notion reading list database as a reference for the rest of this guide.
The ‘Name’ column is the title property of this database. We will move its content manually to another column since we can’t duplicate title columns.
2. Create a column with the ‘Text’ property type
Start by clicking the '+' icon at the rightmost end of the database view.
Select the ‘Text’ property type.
Notion will insert a new column towards the rightmost end of the database.
We named it 'Duplicate' because its purpose is to contain content from the current title column.
We also moved it next to the title column for demonstration purposes.
3. Copy and paste the contents of the title column into the new column
Select all the cells under the title column and use the CMD/CTRL + C shortcut to copy the text. Select the topmost cell in the ‘Duplicate’ column and use the CMD/CTRL + V shortcut to past content into the column.
4. Empty the title column and resize it
With content secured in the 'Duplicate' column, it's safe to remove the content from the title column.
Since we want the title column to take up minimal space and be less visible, we will reduce its width to the minimum.
5. Drag the title column out of the immediate view
We moved the title column to the far right of the database view, effectively hiding it.
