There is no direct way to embed an Excel spreadsheet into Notion. You first need to upload Excel to Google Sheets and then embed the Google Sheets URL into Notion.
The process of embedding Excel into Notion should have been simple with the availability of the 'Embed' block. Using it, users can upload any file type, like .csv, .xlsx, from their local drive into Notion. But in most instances, this process puts the embed block in a continuous loop as it tries to read the file and fails.
While the issue is yet to be fixed, you can upload Excel to Notion using Google Sheets.
Here’s how to do that:
1. Upload your Excel spreadsheet to Google Sheets
We will first import the Excel sheet into Google Sheets and then get into Notion and embed it in the subsequent steps.
1. Open Google Sheets and access the ‘Import’ option
Click on ‘File’ in the menu bar of Google Sheets and click on the ‘Import’ option.
2. Click on ‘Upload’
Google Sheets will pop-up a window where you can select the file that you want to import.
Since we have the Excel sheet available in the local drive, we will select the ‘Upload’ option. By doing this, we inform Google Sheets that we are not trying to import a sheet from the Google Drive. Instead, we want to import it from the local drive.
Next, click on ‘Browse’ to access your local drive or drag and drop the Excel sheet into the pop-up screen.
3. Browse your local drive to find the Excel file to upload
4. Select ‘Replace spreadsheet’ and click on the ‘Import data’ button
All other options either replace the whole document or insert new sheets. Selecting ‘Replace spreadsheet’ simply replaces the empty spreadsheet of the new document with data from the Excel sheet.
5. You have successfully uploaded your Excel spreadsheet to Google Sheets
Next, let’s embed the spreadsheet in Notion using the Google Sheets URL.
2. Create a new page
Open the Notion page where you want to embed the Excel spreadsheet or create a new one.
We will use the following page for reference throughout this guide.
3. Type “/drive”
Type “/drive” anywhere inside the page. This will prompt Notion to display the Google Drive embed block.
Click on the “Google Drive” option.
4. Embed the public Google Sheets URL
Similar to the process of embedding a Google calendar in Notion, you need to first make the Google Sheet public before embedding it.
Once that is done, copy the URL and paste it into the embed block, as displayed in the image above.
5. Connect your Google account
If you don't want to make your Google Sheets document public, you need to connect it to Notion.
To do that, click on the “Embed Google drive” option, as displayed in the image above and then click on “Connect Google account”.
6. Grant access to your Google Drive
Select the Google account you want to connect to Notion and click "Allow," as displayed in the image below.
This connects Notion with your Google account. You need not make Google documents public before embedding it in Notion.
7. Embed the Excel spreadsheet into Notion
Once the Google Drive and Notion are connected, you can search for the required Google drive documents within Notion. Look for the Excel spreadsheet uploaded to Google Sheets and embed it into Notion.
You Excel sheet is now embedded into Notion, ready for edits.
8. Resize the imported Excel sheet
On hovering over the embedded Google Sheets document, you will notice some lines. You can click on them and drag to resize the embedded document.
