While Notion offers many features that modern spreadsheets require through its database - like formatting, formulae, etc. - Google Sheets continues to be the most popular spreadsheet app. Most have used Google Sheets for many years and prefer to stick with it for all spreadsheet-related activities.
While they might prefer to use Notion for managing projects, they resort to Google Sheets for planning and calculations. If you are someone who loves using Notion for everything but also depends on Google Sheets, there’s a way you can get the best of both worlds.
You can embed Google Sheets right inside Notion and use both without having to switch tabs!
Here are the two methods of embedding Google Sheets in Notion:
Method 1: Using the “Google Drive Embed Block”
1. Create a new page
Open the Notion page where you want to embed Google Sheets or create a new one.
We will use the following page for reference throughout this guide.
2. Type “/drive”
Type “/drive” anywhere inside the page. This will prompt Notion to display the Google Drive embed block, as displayed in the image below.
Click on the “Google Drive” option.
3. Embed the public Google Sheets URL
Similar to the process of embedding a Google calendar in Notion, you need to first make the Google Sheet public before embedding it.
Once that is done, copy the URL and paste it into the embed block, as displayed in the image above.
4. Connect your Google account
If you don't want to make your Google Sheets document public, you need to connect it to Notion.
To do that, click on the “Embed Google drive” option, as displayed in the image above and then click on “Connect Google account”.
5. Grant access to your Google Drive
Select the Google account you want to connect to Notion and click "Allow," as displayed in the image below.
This connects Notion with your Google account. You need not make Google documents public before embedding it in Notion.
6. Search for the file
Once the Google Drive and Notion are connected, you can search for the required Google drive documents within Notion before embedding it.
7. Resize the embedded Google sheet
On hovering over the embedded Google Sheets document, you will notice some lines. You can click on them and drag to resize the embedded document.
Method 2: Using the embed block
While using the Google Drive embed block allows you to insert the document easily, you won’t be able to edit it. This defeats the purpose of embedding the document as the intent was to bring it into Notion and edit it without switching tabs.
You can embed an editable Google Sheets document by using the Embed block. Here’s how to do that:
1. Type “/embed” and select the embed block
2. Paste the link to the Google sheet that you want to embed
You can either use a public Google Sheets document or connect Notion with Sheets before pasting the URL inside the embed block.
3. Resize and edit the embedded Google sheet
Now that the editable Google Sheet is available inside Notion, you can simply hover over it and pull along the drag lines to resize the block.
