Table of contents
While scrolling through a Notion database, users can get a better understanding of the layout by locking some cells in place.
This feature is especially useful since Notion does not support alphabetical column identifiers like Google Sheets or Excel do, making it hard to find your place in large databases without having to scroll all the way back to the top.
By freezing columns, you can maintain context in the layout without excessive scrolling. The frozen columns remain visible as you scroll right, across other Notion columns.
TL;DR
- Open the target Notion database
- Drag all columns you want to freeze to the left
- Freeze Notion columns using the ‘Freeze upto column’ option
Here's how to freeze columns in the table view of a Notion database:
1. Open the Notion database
We will use a sample Notion budget tracker template for demonstration purposes.
The left columns - ‘Instrument’ and ‘Category’ - disappear from the view on scrolling all the way to the right.
By the end of this guide, those two columns along with a few more will be frozen.
2. Drag all columns you want to freeze to the left
Freeze as many columns as you like, but ensure they are moved to the far left of the database.
If the columns you want to freeze are to the right of columns you don't want to freeze, drag them left by clicking and holding the column header, then moving the mouse to the desired position.
In our example, let's assume the 'Paid By' column should always be visible, regardless of scrolling. Let's drag it to the right of the 'Category' column, arranging all freezable columns together.
3. Freeze the columns
Right-click on the rightmost column you want to freeze and select the 'Freeze up to column' option. This column and all those to its left are now frozen.
In our example, we froze the 'Amount' column along with all columns to its left.
Here's how the database looks without scrolling:
The 'Date' column is immediately to the right of the 'Amount' column. Now let's scroll to the right.
The partially visible 'Cash flow type' column indicates the left columns are frozen.
How to unfreeze columns in Notion?
Simply right-click the rightmost frozen column and click the ‘Unfreeze columns’ option.
