Making Notion pages look aesthetic is important when you look at them all day, everyday. Notion blocks and dark mode allow some customization but it’s quite limited.
While you can change the background color of a page to black with the Notion dark mode, you can’t change it to another color, until you create a Notion website with Super.
To change the background color in Notion:
- Open the Notion page, hover over the block that needs a color update.
- Click the six-dots icon that appears on hovering.
- Expand the “Color” option and click the preferred background color.
A quicker method is typing “/color” and selecting the color combination that Notion displays.
An even faster method is typing “/” followed by the color. For example, by typing “/Yellow”, you will see two options — to set the color of the text and to set a color combination of text and background. Click the second option to change the background color to yellow.
Let’s cover the steps in detail.
1. Open the Notion page
Below is the sample page that we will use for demonstration. Create a new Notion page or open and existing one that contains the block requiring a background change.
2. Click on the six-dot icon
Let’s change the color of the text block that reads “Focus Area”. By hovering over the block, you will see a six-dot icon next to the block, as displayed in the below image.
Click on it to open the options menu.
3. Click on the “Color” option and choose a background color
The color option will contain all the color options that Notion offers at the block level, as displayed in the below image.
Let’s select the “Orange” background for our example.
4. Click anywhere on the page
After completing these steps, the background color changes as demonstrated in the below screenshot.
How to add a background to a Notion page?
The only background you can add to a Notion page is the color black. You can do so by changing the theme of Notion from light to dark. However, you can’t change the background color of the page to any other hue unless you publish your Notion pages with Super.
Here’s how you can set up the background for your Notion pages in Super:
1. Click the “Colors” option under “Design” in your Super dashboard
2. Click the “Page Background” option under the “Main” dropdown
Toggle between Light and Dark mode to customize colors in those modes. Super enables you to customize the page background for both setups. In our example, we will stick with the Light mode.
3. Select a color and hit “Save Changes”
We have set the page background to a light shade of yellow, as demonstrated in the below image. You can pick any background color by entering the hex code or by clicking and dragging along the color selection section.
