- Here’s why your Notion Slack integration is not working
Notion and Slack do not just compete as collaboration tools; they also work together. By setting up the Notion-Slack integration, you can combine the power of both while nullifying most individual shortcomings.
For example, Notion is a stellar database management tool but Slack has a better notification system. An integration allows you to trigger Slack notifications for indicated changes in a Notion database.
We will cover more such use-cases, but the primary focus of this guide is to demonstrate the process of integrating the two tools.
Make sure you have an active Notion account and Slack workspace before getting started.
TL;DR
Here’s how to integrate Notion with Slack:
1. Click the ‘Settings’ option in the Notion sidebar
2. Access the ‘Connections’ tab
3. Click on the ‘Browse connections in Gallery’ hyperlink
4. Search for ‘Slack’ and click the only search result you see on the screen
5. Add Slack to Notion
6. Sign into the Slack workspace to grant Slack access to Notion
Let’s dive into details.
1. Access the ‘Settings’ view from the Notion sidebar
The ‘Settings’ view is where all account and workspace settings can be tweaked. Access it from your sidebar as demonstrated in the image below.
2. Click the ‘Connections’ tab
You can integrate Slack with Notion workspaces, not your account, so look for the ‘Connections’ tab under the ‘Workspace’ section.
3. Access Notion integration gallery
Click through the ‘Browse connections in Gallery’ hyperlink.
4. Click on the ‘Slack’ integration card
Search for ‘Slack’ and click the only search result.
You will land on the Notion Slack integration homepage.
5. Integrate Slack with Notion
The Notion Slack integration page contains the ‘Add to Notion’ button in the navbar. Click the button to start the integration process.
6. Sign into Slack
Notion will ask you to verify your Slack workspace to confirm that you are a member.
Enter your Slack workspace’s name and click the ‘Continue’ button.
Next, tweak the level of access that Notion can have on your selected Slack space and click the ‘Allow’ button.
You’ll now be able to see the name of your Notion workspace at the top-right of the screen.
Click ‘Allow access’ to finish setting up the Notion-Slack integration.
Notion now has access to your Slack workspace. Locate it under the ‘Apps’ section in your Slack sidebar.
Make the best use of Notion Slack integration
Alright, now that Notion and Slack are connected, it’s time to put their combined power to best use. Here are a few common use-cases:
1. Provide access to Notion pages directly from Slack
Did you share the link to a Notion page without realizing that the recipient did not have access? No problem. Slack will immediately inform you about this by sending a message in the same chat window that only you can see.
Furthermore, you can provide the appropriate level of access to the user, directly from Slack.
2. Use Notion database automation to send Slack notifications
By setting up Notion database automation, you can command Notion to perform certain actions based on triggers. Let’s take the example of a small team that uses Notion databases for project tracking. Using the automation capability, the users can add new pages to the database or send Notion notifications to other users.
By integrating Notion with Slack, you can also send notifications via Slack. In fact, this is the only database automation capability available to Notion users on the free plan.
3. Add tasks to Notion databases
Want to add an important task to a database but Notion is sluggish? Use Slack instead.
By typing ‘/Notion create’ and typing the ‘Return’ key, you can access another window that allows adding a new page to an existing Notion database.
Start by selecting the database by typing in the first three characters of its name and clicking the right option from the selection dropdown.
Next, type the name of the page and click the ‘Add Property’ button.
Notion allows you to choose a property from the dropdown and assign it a value.
Add value to any other properties associated with the database, pertinent to the page, and click the ‘Save’ button.
And just like that a new page gets added to your database.
Here’s why your Notion Slack integration is not working
Your Notion integration with Slack might not work if you do not have admin access to either workspace. Reach out to the owner of either or both workspaces - depending upon your current access level - to either give you admin access.
