If you have used Notion for a while and got through the initial overwhelm, it’s natural that you want to do everything on the platform, right from taking notes to creating a blog.
That’s not just because the platform is addictive, but also because it allows you to integrate with your favorite tools and embed content created elsewhere.
One such tool is Google Docs - a more popular content editing tool. Your team probably uses it as well. It’s also the go-to choice for cross-functional teams.
But does that mean you need to switch to Google Docs? Nope. Not when you can embed it into Notion. Here’s how:
1. Create a new Notion page
We will embed a Google Doc in the below Notion page.
2. Make the Google Doc public
Notion needs access to the Google Doc to embed it. You can grant it the authority by making your Google Doc public.
1. Go to the Google Doc that you want to embed and click the share button
2. Click the Restricted drop-down and select the Anyone with the link option
3. Copy URL
Click the Viewer drop-down to change the access level to Editor or Commenter, and then click the Copy link button.
4. Create an embed block
Let’s jump back into Notion and create an embed block that will contain the Google Doc.
Start by writing /embed — This prompts Notion to display the Embed block option. Click on it to insert an empty embed block.
Click the empty block, paste the URL in it, and click on the Embed link button as demonstrated in the image below.
5. Resize the Google Doc embed
Your Google Doc is now embedded inside the Notion page. Click and drag along the corner lines to resize it.
Reasons for Notion Google Docs embed not working
1. Insufficient permissions
You can’t embed Google Docs without sufficient permission to share. You need to make it available publicly to embed it into Notion. Revisit step 2 in this guide to edit accessibility of the Google Doc.
2. Incorrect embed format
An easy way to embed links in Notion is simply pasting the URL and selecting the Embed link option. While this works for most tools like Spotify, Pinterest, etc., it doesn’t work for Google Docs. Try using the Embed block to see how it works.
We covered the step-by-step process of embedding a Google Doc in Notion. You can share documents with different access levels. For example, you can grant employees View access to your knowledge base because you do not want to edit them. Similarly, you can share Comment access if you want people to share their thoughts without editing the text.
