Adding Notion images provides visual relief from blocks of text and keeps users engaged. It especially helps in keeping bounce rates low and conversion rates high for Notion-based websites.
TL;DR
Here’s how to add images to Notion:
1. Open the Notion page where you want to add images
2. Create an ‘Image’ block by typing ‘/Image’
3. Add an image to Notion from any of the four sources
4. Edit, resize, and move the image
Let’s discuss the steps in detail:
1. Open the target Notion page
Create a new Notion page or open an existing one to insert an image. Notion supports adding images to databases as well, but we will stick with adding images to pages in this guide.
Access our guide to using Notion gallery view to learn how to use images in databases.
We will use our ‘Agency Dashboard’ page for demonstration purposes.
2. Create an ‘Image’ block
The ‘Image’ block in Notion is designed to support all image and GIF assets. To add one to the page, simply type, ‘/image’ and click on the block that Notion displays.
3. Add an image to Notion
After creating the ‘Image’ block, Notion will display a popup containing four methods of adding images.
1. Upload images from your local drive
The ‘Upload’ option is open by default, as displayed in the above image.
Click on ‘Upload file’ from the popup window to access your local drive.
Browse through local files and choose the image you want to add to Notion.
2. Embed image using a public link
To add a publicly available, royalty-free image from the web, click on the ‘Embed link’ option.
Copy and paste the image URL into the text box and click on the ‘Embed image’ button.
3. Insert an image from Unsplash
Unsplash is a treasure trove of high-quality, royalty-free images. To insert images from there, click on the ‘Unsplash’ option and type a keyword to find the right images.
Click on the image that aligns with the topic and design of your page to add it to Notion.
4. Add GIF images to Notion
Images in motion can be distracting but when used in the right place, they can enhance the appearance of a Notion page.
Add GIFs by clicking on the ‘GIPHY’ option, typing in a relevant keyword, and selecting a GIF from the options provided by Notion.
In our example, we added an image from Unsplash.
4. Edit, resize, and move the image
This is an optional step but essential to make images blend with the rest of the page.
Notion allows you to crop images to retain only the necessary section of an image. This is useful if you want to focus on only a part of the image and exclude the rest of it.
Notion also supports resizing images, allowing you to fit them into the page seamlessly.
You may also find the ability to move the images around the page useful. Click on the six-dots icon that appears when you hover over an image, drag it around the page, and drop it where you want. Move it to the left or right of existing content to add it as a new column or simply move it under or above other blocks to reposition it.
How to add a clickable image in Notion?

Paste the link to a page in the text box, and press the ‘Return’ key to add a link to the Notion image.

FAQs
Can you store photos on Notion?
Yes, you can store images in Notion that are up to 5MB in size - Notion puts them in the Notion S3 instance. The 5MB limit means you can’t store high-quality images in Notion as they occupy considerable disk space.
Furthermore, you can’t password protect Notion pages until you use Super, which means your images are not as safe as, say, in Google Drive.
While it’s okay to store some images, it’s best to avoid using Notion as the go-to storage tool for images.
How to add an image to a header in Notion?
To add the header image to Notion, click on the ‘Add cover’ button that appears when you hover over the page title. Notion automatically adds a banner image from its built-in gallery.
Hover over the current cover image and click on ‘Change cover’ to change the header image. Notion will display a new popup window where you can select an image from any of these sources:
1. Local drive
2. Unsplash
3. Publicly available image on the internet - through the ‘Embed’ option
4. Notion’s built-in gallery
How to add text next to a Notion image?
1. Create a ‘2-column’ block.
2. Add an ‘Image’ block to one of the columns
3. Type text in the other column.
This allows you to display text and images next to each other.
How to add a caption to Notion image?
Click on the ‘Caption’ icon that appears when you hover over a Notion image. This will enable the captions section where you can type text.
