Redirecting a page (301/302) or taking a page offline (404) is used to automatically send viewers from one web page to another or to indicate that a page no longer exists. These are important in maintaining a good user experience and SEO performance. In Super you can easily setup a temporary or permanent redirect.
Redirecting a page or sending a 404 error message is useful for you because it helps maintain a good user experience by ensuring visitors are directed to the correct page. It can also help keep search engine results accurate and up-to-date, as search engines consider 404 errors when indexing websites.
Additionally, using a 301 redirect can transfer SEO value from an old page to a new page, while a 302 redirect can be used for temporary URL changes. Overall, using redirection and 404 errors can help ensure that your website is user-friendly and easy to navigate.
What’s the difference between 301 and 302 redirects?
When deciding which type of redirect to use, it's important to consider the long-term goals for your website.
301 is a permanent redirect
A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect that indicates to search engines that the original URL has been replaced with a new URL. This type of redirect is ideal for situations where the old URL is no longer needed, such as when a product is discontinued or when a page has been removed from your website.
On the other hand, a 302 redirect is a temporary redirect that indicates to search engines that the original URL will be returning in the future. This type of redirect is ideal for situations where you need to temporarily redirect traffic to a different page while you work on updating the original page.
302 is a temporary redirect
In general, it's best to use a 301 redirect whenever possible, as this will ensure that search engines and users are directed to the correct page and that any SEO value from the old page is transferred to the new page. However, if you need to temporarily redirect traffic, a 302 redirect is a good option to use.
