Yes, Notion is free forever for individuals and small teams. You can access most Notion features with the free plan but would need to upgrade or pay an add-on fee for niche features. The tool is designed to sell itself with the free plan, encouraging users to try one of the paid plans to accommodate their ever-evolving needs and increasing dependence on the tool.
For example, a team of 10 on Notion might soon need to grow or use more Notion features. In that case, the free plan would not suffice and the team would have to upgrade to a paid one. Furthermore, capabilities like Notion Sites are available at a very limited level with the free plan so users need to upgrade to use it to the full capability, irrespective of the team size. Similarly, Notion AI has an add-on cost so even users on the free plan must pay to use this capability.
In short, Notion is free to use to a certain extent and for most use-cases but users need to pay for premium features and large teams.
What all is free in Notion and when to upgrade to a paid plan?
Blocks and pages
Use unlimited blocks and pages for an individual user.
But if you have more than one workspace owner, you get only 1000 blocks. You will need to upgrade to one of the paid plans to use unlimited blocks.
File uploads
You can upload any number of files up to 5MB each.
To upload unlimited files up to 5GB each, upgrade to a paid plan.
Page history
The free plan allows accessing only up to 7 days old versions of a page.
With a paid plan you can access Notion page versions that are 30 days or older.
Guest invites
You can invite up to 10 guests to your workspace with the free plan.
Paid plans support for guests starts from 100 with the Plus plan.
Database automations
The Notion free plan supports very basic database automation, allowing only Slack notifications.
The Plus plan offers a wider range of automations.
Notion charts
You can create only one Notion chart with the free plan.
There’s no limit on the number of charts that you can create with the paid plans.
notion.site domain
You can create only one notion.site domain for your published pages with the free plan and five with the paid plans.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
You get very basic SEO features with the Notion free plan.
You need to upgrade to index your website on search engines and to add meta tags.
Additionally, you need a paid Notion subscription to customize your site by adding a homepage, custom domain, favicon, and navigation bar.
None of the Notion plans support custom fonts, colors, or any other design capabilities. Plus, the SEO features are quite limited. You can’t add a footer, customize with code, or integrate with any tool other than Google Analytics.
You can do all that and more with Super paid plans. It is cheaper to build a Notion-based website with Super if you are not on a paid Notion plan. And even if you are, the features to price ratio heavily favors Super. Notion paid plans provide a variety of features, and Notion Sites is just one of them. Super, on the other hand, specializes in building websites with content in Notion.
